Locksley Resources Stock Jumps as Rare Earth Strategy Gains Momentum
Locksley Resources (ASX: LKY) has quickly caught the market’s attention, with its share price jumping 18 percent after announcing a major expansion of its exploration program at the Mojave Project in California. For investors, this is more than just another small-cap exploration update. The project sits at the heart of one of the world’s most strategic supply chain challenges: rare earth elements.
China currently controls nearly 70 percent of global rare earth supply and over 90 percent of processing capacity. That dominance has turned these materials into a flashpoint for U.S. national security, with billions of dollars now flowing from the Department of Defense to support new domestic mining and processing projects. Against that backdrop, Locksley’s growing landholding directly next to MP Materials—the only major U.S. producer—places it in a uniquely strategic position.
The question for investors is whether this expansion signals the early stages of a transformative opportunity for Locksley, or whether the company will face the same hurdles that have slowed many explorers before it.
Mountain Pass: Why the Real Value Lies in NdPr, Not Ore Volume
The Mountain Pass mine holds a unique position as the only site in North America currently producing rare earth oxides. Its resource is dominated by light rare earth elements, with lanthanum and cerium making up around 80 percent of the total oxide content. These elements are relatively abundant and contribute limited economic value.
The real strategic significance lies in the smaller share of neodymium and praseodymium (NdPr), which are critical for manufacturing permanent magnets used in electric vehicles, renewable energy systems, and advanced technologies. For investors, the long-term case for Mountain Pass is therefore less about the sheer volume of ore and more about the company’s ability to efficiently extract and monetise these high-value elements.
Locksley Resources Expansion Brings Long-Term Potential, but Risks Remain
For Locksley, the recent expansion signals potential for long-term value creation, particularly given the success of Mountain Pass in the U.S. and the favourable geological setting of the Mojave Project. By broadening the scope of its exploration program, the company is positioned to accelerate timelines and test the scale of its operations more effectively, which could support ongoing momentum in the share price. That said, investors should be mindful of the risks. Exploration results remain inherently uncertain, and while proximity to Mountain Pass offers strong geological encouragement, it does not guarantee the discovery of an economic deposit.
