From Oculus to AI Warfare: Palmer Luckey’s Vision Behind Anduril’s Rise

Anduril is one of the most fascinating private companies in the modern defence landscape. Based in California, it sits at the centre of the global defence technology boom, blending Silicon Valley innovation with military-grade purpose. What makes it especially interesting is the vision of its founder, Palmer Luckey, the same entrepreneur who created Oculus before selling it to Meta.

Since its founding, Anduril has rapidly become a key partner to the US government, securing major contracts such as a USD 159 million deal with the U.S. Army for a mixed-reality training system and a potential USD 642 million agreement with the US Navy to advance counter-drone technology. These wins highlight the scale of trust and reliance placed on the company’s technology.

At its core, Anduril is redefining how artificial intelligence is integrated into defence systems. Its technologies, such as the Eagle Eye augmented-reality platform, enhance soldiers’ situational awareness by embedding AI-driven visual data directly into their helmets. It’s a striking example of how AI is moving from software labs to real-world battlefields.

Backed by USD 2.5 Billion, Aiming to Keep the U.S. Ahead in the AI Defence Race

The driving force behind Anduril’s growth stems from founder Palmer Luckey’s conviction that the United States risks falling behind China in defence innovation. His motivation is rooted in the belief that, should tensions over Taiwan escalate, America’s military advantage could be tested. This concern has shaped Anduril’s mission: to modernise US defence technology and ensure it remains a formidable global competitor.

In June, Anduril raised USD 2.5 billion in a funding round that valued the company at approximately USD 30.5 billion, a remarkable figure for a private defence contractor. The raise created strong investor confidence in both Anduril’s technology and the broader defence technology sector, which is increasingly viewed as essential to geopolitical stability.

According to Fortune Business Insights, the global unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) market is currently valued at around USD 41 billion and is projected to expand to more than USD 125 billion by 2032. The growing reliance on drones in modern warfare, particularly observed in the Russia–Ukraine conflict, highlights the accelerating demand for autonomous and AI-driven defence systems, a trend that positions Anduril squarely at the centre of the industry’s next wave of growth.

The AI Software Powering Anduril’s Defence Ecosystem

Anduril builds impressive hardware, but its Lattice software is the glue that makes everything work. Lattice ingests real-time sensor feeds from the battlefield, aggregates that data and uses AI techniques such as sensor fusion, computer vision, and edge computing to detect, track, and identify objects for operators.

What sets it apart is orchestration. Lattice lets a single operator coordinate multiple defence assets across air, sea and land, turning dozens of disparate systems into a single, manageable battle management layer.

From an investor perspective, this matters because the value is not just in one-off kit sales. The platform creates a data network effect that improves performance over time, supports higher margin software revenu,e and raises the switching cost for customers who adopt the ecosystem.
