Diggers And Dealers is on this week! It is not the only conference for mining and resources companies, but it is arguably the most important. The key takeaway is that you should tune into the livestream when your company is presenting – if it is.

But here’s what else you need to know about Diggers And Dealers – even if you’re not going.

What is Diggers and Dealers?

Diggers & Dealers is Australia’s premier mining investment and industry forum, held annually in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. It is in the historic gold‑town of Kalgoorlie, delegates can arrange mine site tours with presenters that have operational sites within a reasonable drive.

First held in 1992, the Diggers And Dealers forum has grown from just 10 delegates to attracting over 2,700 industry professionals by 2024. It brings together listed mining and exploration companies, investors, brokers, financiers, analysts, service providers, and media – all converging to share corporate presentations, exhibition booths, and networking opportunities in a regional mining hub.

For companies, Diggers And Dealers is a chance to get their story out there or (if it is) to update things. A big contingent of journalists, analysts, investors and other industry professionals attend – the ideal audience to reach. Structured social events (such as the opening cocktail party and the gala dinner on the last night) along with informal gatherings during the day foster connections that often translate into investment, R&D partnerships, and project funding.

What’s on in 2025

One curiosity this year is that there won’t be one keynote speaker this year. Instead it’ll be a panel including Canadian nuclear advocate Chris Keefer and CIS executive Aiden Morrison with Morrison’s colleague Tom Switzer moderating. It isn’t unreasonable to conclude it will be about where nuclear advocacy goes from here, following the resounding defeat of the Coalition which was put down to its nuclear policy.

Much of the rest of the program will see company presentations. The first two to speak will be uranium plays Paladin (ASX:PDN) and Boss Energy (ASX:BOE). In our view, the latter will be interesting given its ‘upgrade’ to its capex and opex for its Honeymoon Project last week. Plus it’ll be the last time long-term boss Duncan Craib addresses the forum before he sets off into the sunset. Other companies on the first day will be Evolution (ASX:EVN), Ramelius (ASX:RMS), Core Lithium (ASX:CXO), Genesis Minerals (ASX:GMD) and Patriot Battery Metals (ASX:PMT).

Day 2 will kick off with gold giant Northern Star (ASX:NST), followed by Arafura (ASX:AFU). WA Resources (ASX:WA1) and Gorilla Gold Mines (ASX:GG8) are amongst the more intriguing fast-growth companies to speak later in the morning, while Liontown (ASX:LTR) and Bellevue (ASX:BGL) in the afternoon. Wednesday’s highlights will include Chalice (ASX:CHN), Gold Road (ASX:GOR) and Gold Fields.

So what to expect?

Don’t expect to hear any major news (at least nothing you have heard before). But you may see share price movement because some investors at Diggers & Dealers may not have known about your company before. You may also see your company’s CEO make headlines for comments about red tape or where commodity prices are headed to next. Could we see a Coldplay kiss cam moment? Probably not in our view.

What many Diggers & Dealers attendees will be looking forward to is the awards night. The most intriguing awards include deal of the year and also Best Emerging Company. For a while it had a reputation as being a bad omen because so many hit the skids (with some exceptions). But thing have changed somewhat in recent years with De Grey surging to be bought out for $6bn and Liontown and Chalice stumbling across big discoveries – yes, those two are off their all time highs, but things could have been worse. Just ask companies like ABM (now Prodigy Gold).

Conclusion

Diggers & Dealers is the most prominant conference for the mining and resources sector. Some things that go on in Kalgoorlie will stay in Kalgoorlie, but others will make their way out. Perhaps your company will emerge with a new set of investors. Perhaps it will receive the ‘kiss of death’ award.

Even if some companies walk away with nothing but having had a few days away from their West Perth offices or nearby sites, that won’t be the case for all of them.
